Today will be the first day I visit the mysterious country of Cambodia for a beer known as Angkor beer. The pale lager Angkor beer is brewed by Cambrew (Carlsberg) in Sihanoukville, Cambodia. Angkor beer is named after Angkor Wat, a region of Cambodia that was the seat of the Khmer Empire centuries ago around 802 A.D. till 1431 when it was ran-sacked by a rebellion. Angkor Wat was the largest pre-industrial city in the world with 390 miles of temples. So in the early 1960's the Cambodian government decided to brew and name a beer after these gorgeous temples. Angkor beer is an exotic beer that ranges from a 5.2% to a 5.5 % ABV. This straw yellow, mild to medium carbonated beer is very clear and you can see right through it. When you pour, the airy white head is pretty big and makes a fizzing sound. The taste is crispy, malty, sweet, and has the lightest hop finish. The bitterness is low and is perfect for staying hydrated after eating hot Asian food or after a day of running around the Angkorian temple ruins. "My Country, My Beer" is their modo and is written in Cambodian under the Angkor title. Next time when you are exploring or having a archaeological dig in Angkor Wat grab yourself and ice cold Angkor beer and relive the Khmer dynasty!
